Aloe Vera: Your Summer Skin Saver
Our skin takes a beating all year-round, yet summertime always comes with extra abuse that truly requires the A-Team. The “A,” in this case, is for “aloe,” and it belongs in every backpack and first aid kit around!
Ancient civilizations have been using the aloe vera plant as their “herbal medicine chest” for centuries. This multi-tasking herb is astonishing because it can work fast as a stand-alone treatment to soothe discomfort and pain from cuts, burns and scrapes due to its natural pain-relieving properties. Yet, remarkably, it also works as a catalyst (herbal bitter) when taken daily before meals to improve one’s digestion of food nutrients,
reducing gas, heartburn and constipation, too, which are all critical for optimizing healthy skin and a healthy body.
Aloe’s Powerful Phytonutrients
Whole leaf aloe vera contains over 100 actives, including vitamins, minerals, proteins and essential fats, plus important phytonutrients:
- Anthraquinones
: The dark yellow sap that includes aloe’s herbal bitters. It is essential in receiving all the benefits of improved digestion and bioavailability of food nutrients.
- Sterols
: These fats and oils are linked to lowering inflammation in the body, soothing joints and allergies, and aiding in immunity support.
- Salicylic acid
: Soothes pain on the skin, such as acne and other blemishes, helps fight infection, and internally allows wounds to heal with the help from the aloe’s growth factor called gibberellins.
Using aloe vera is so easy, and it actually works! Along with making healthy food choices this summer, try applying aloe vera with your SPF sunscreen and then after sun with your favorite lotion. Researchers have found that applying a quality aloe vera product to the skin reduces the UVB ray damage being emitted from the sun. More anecdotally, reports from aloe vera juice drinkers state that they just don’t burn as easily as they used to since drinking it daily. Either way, the results will speak for themselves, especially when living an active outdoor life – give it a try!
- Eat whole foods, including brightly colored fruits and veggies, containing vitamins, minerals and proteins for extra skin-nourishing nutrients.
- Pre- and post-sun exposure, apply SPF and Aloe Vera Skin Gel, Aloe Mist Spray or aloe leaves. If dryness occurs, apply an aloe vera-rich lotion.
- Drink a quality aloe vera juice supplement or take tablets daily for skin support and overall body wellness.*
Be sure to search for the aloe vera products that are not over-processed. When the products contain the important actives, including the important dark golden yellow color, you will experience what ancient civilizations have known all along – that aloe vera is the most important foundational herb of all time! Enjoy.
*Take caution: Ingesting aloe vera is safe for kids and adults; however, the plant contains the phytonutrient aloin. Some scientists believe this helps support immunity in the body, yet it also stimulates the bowels. If you’re more sensitive, start with just a small amount of a product and if diarrhea occurs reduce your daily amount. It is always best to take in small amounts first, right before a meal, which helps sensitive individuals.
