Finding Purpose in Empowerment
HOW IT STARTED
It all started as a bestfriend- bathroom-chat at university in London, UK, where Susan and I (Tara) met. While daydreaming about having our own socially impactful business one day, we realized that there was a huge gap in the British market for organic, plant-based period care products. Pondering on the fact that corporate tampon brands were using synthetic materials and harsh chemicals, and were also mostly owned and operated by men, we decided to create a fierce + feminist brand that would challenge the norm through healthier, eco-friendlier, ‘adorabler’ products. Later that year, my master’s dissertation became the market research for FLO, and that’s how our beautiful journey began!
THE INSPIRATION
We wanted to create a product that wasn’t just better for our bodies and the planet, but also honored and empowered women and people who menstruate. Firstly, our packaging was inspired by sweets and icecream, as a nod to period cravings – but, most importantly, as a sign of “we’ve got your back” to everyone who has ever felt ashamed when buying tampons or pads from their local supermarket. Through our signature tampons-in-ice-cream tubs, we wanted to add touch of color, confidence and kindness to our life’s messiest bodily moments, and spread an empowering message - that natural bodily functions shouldn’t be taboo. This is something we’ve reflected in both our FLO (period care) and XO! (sexual wellness) ranges.
GIVING BACK
We’re also proud to support women and marginalized communities by donating 5% of our profits to organizations like Orchid Project, who are working towards ending female genital cutting (also known as FGM) around the world, and Bloody Good Period, who are leading the fight for menstrual equity. Plus, we make monthly product donations to refugee asylums, food banks, and homeless shelters, and each pack of our XO! Righteous Rubber condoms supports a U.N. Sustainable Development Goals project, while also being carbon neutral and participating in the Regenerative Rubber Initiative™.
