Local Farmer Spotlight
SKAGIT RIVER RANCH
Fisherman–turned–farmer, George Vojkovich got tired of the sea after 30 years on the job and decided to try his hand at sustainable farming. Located along the beautiful Skagit River in Sedro Woolley, Washington, Skagit River Ranch has a commitment to farming in harmony with the environment. They grow a variety of grasses, legumes and herbs to provide a balanced diet and essential nutrients for healthy farm animals. George jokes, “I’m a grass farmer who grows cows.” For the past 18 years, Skagit River Ranch has raised wholesome, great-tasting organic grass-fed beef, as well as organic chicken, turkey and eggs. Skagits' Wagyu and Angus cattle are 100% grass-fed and certified organic. Their chickens feast on local organic grains milled on the farm to ensure the highest quality, non-GMO feed. They raise their animals happily and humanely in their pastures without the use of any chemicals, pesticides or hormones. Skagit River Ranch finds pure joy in strengthening the link between their land, sustainable farming and their customers.
COZY VALE CREAMERY
Laura Barta decided to take dairy farming into her own hands after losing faith in the big corporate farm business. In 2009, Cozy Vale Creamery, a family-run micro-dairy, opened its barn doors to the public and sold its first batch of raw milk. Laurie and her son are the backbone of the Cozy Vale operation, located in Tenino, Washington. They offer wholesome, fresh, unpasteurized and non-homogenized, delightfully delicious raw milk to their thirsty customers across the Pacific Northwest. Laurie’s dairy cows are non-GMO, free of antibiotics and hormones, and 99% grass fed—all 12 of them! Caring for a smaller herd allows Laurie to pay special attention to each cow and keep a close eye on their health. She treats her dairy cows like family and cares for her land fiercely, running her farm as sustainably and organically as possible. As a female farmer, Laurie says she faces the same challenges as her male farmer counterparts and more, but doesn’t let the stereotypes and shortcomings affect her spirit or passion. Laurie and her team are dedicated to caring for the land and their ladies, and in turn they provide the best raw milk around.
EARLY BIRD FARM
Nestled off of a winding road in the Puyallup River Valley, Early Bird Farm owners Rawley and Rebecca care for roughly 500 free range laying hens on their 11-acre farm, established in 2013. Their birds are fed strictly certified organic feed that is soy free, non-GMO and locally-sourced. Along with Early Bird’s egg-laying ladies, their land is also home to two Icelandic sheep, one spunky farm dog and an elusive barnyard cat. Early Bird’s chickens are rotated across the pastures in mobile coops, fertilizing the fields for their vegetable patches in the spring. Many of their vegetable crops rely on honeybees for pollination, and their berries, fruit trees and flowers ensure that the bees have plenty of nectar all season long. Cover crops (like buckwheat and alfalfa) and crop rotations warrant healthy soil full of microbes and nutrients for future growth. Rooftop solar panels atop their barn have also helped naturally power their tools and farming equipment. Plus, everything is grown without synthetic chemicals of any kind. Add this all together and the results are sustainably delicious.
