Comfort Zone or Chronic Stress
Has anyone ever told you, you need to get out of your comfort zone?
Technically, to get out of our comfort zone, we need to actually be in a comfort zone. If you are feeling stress, distress, illness or anxiety, then you are not in a comfort zone. You can’t leave what you don’t have.
What is a comfort zone anyway?
Comfort: 1. “A state of physical ease and freedom from pain or constraint; things that contribute to physical ease and well-being; prosperity and the pleasant lifestyle secured by it. 2. The easing or alleviation of a person’s feelings of grief or distress. 3. A warm quilt” (Google definition)
In the zone: “This tunnel-vision phenomenon is reported by athletes, creatives and psychologists alike as a hyper–focused, sometimes spiritual state of mind where anything is possible. It is where we become our most productive, creative and powerful selves” … (Huffpost Emily Hill article: What is being in the Zone)
Instead of creating more stress by making ourselves uncomfortable, let’s start with stress reduction. The focus will be to move towards our health and happiness by creating pockets of coziness and practices of nourishment and states of rhythm and flow. Change is natural and healthy, but it doesn’t need to feel like we are pouring acid on an open wound.
The truth is that most of us are currently living in a state of chronic stress. A little stress is good, it is essential, but what happens when you are in a constant state of stress? It becomes destructive.
Healthy stress is short term and acute. Healthy stress comes from a specific event that raises our stress hormones. It is a onetime event. Once the stressor has passed, we return to normal. Chronic stress is a state of enduring repeated and constant situations (or even a lifestyle) that keeps us on edge. Our stress hormones stay high and don’t return to a healthy normal.
Chronic stress is living in a state of being on alert, on guard, weary and worried. We are constantly in a flight, fight or freeze mode. When we are living in a state of chronic stress, we are not in a comfort zone.
In comfort zones, we are safe, happy, relaxed, confident, healthy and compassionate. We are better at problem solving and are more creative. We have hope. We smile. We are kind. Our laughter bubbles up easily. We are able handle acute stress better and even use it to our advantage. We actually need more comfort zones.
Change is still required in reducing stress and creating comfort zones. Instead of leaving our zones of comfort though, we cultivate them. The focus is not creating more stress by moving away from any comfort we have, but in cultivating nourishing habits and stress reduction practices.
In my work, I start with stress reduction and support creating comfort zones. When our lives are uncluttered, unstressed, rested, nourished and safe, we are all pretty wonderful beings.
