How Our Animals Communicate with Us
Have you ever had a conversation with your dog or cat? Anyone who shares their life with an animal, be it a dog, a cat, a horse, or another type of animal, knows that they communicate with us in a variety of ways. It may be a look, the tilt of the head, a particular sound or simply the way they move. They all communicate with us; we just have to pay attention and learn to listen to their language.
For example, cats love to bring us gifts from their outside adventures and have a particular cry when they give us their present. They are letting us know they have something very special just for us. They also let us know when they want attention or when they simply want to be left alone. They often speak through body language. Cats will turn their back to us when they want to be left alone and, lovingly, pester us when they want attention. Cats let us know when they need us to do something for them, like feed them or provide them with a lap.
Dogs communicate through actions and sounds and have an extensive vocabulary. When they want our attention or when they want to play, they’ll have a high-pitched bark. But when they are trying to warn us about something, or when they sense danger, their bark is pitched low as a warning or to scare away a threat. When we get home, no matter how tired or worn out we feel, dogs are always glad to see us and brighten our day with their uninhibited care-free greeting.
If our pets don’t feel well, we usually can tell; it’s just something we “know.” We may sense that something is “off ” or just “not right.” And, because they are such a big part of our lives, we feel as if we are connected with them, and we are! In fact, we are so well connected that often we can tell what they are thinking or feeling, and because we understand them, they continue have conversations with us. After all, conversations are a two-way street.
Animals are a wonderful influence in our lives and a constant source of joy. Sometimes they give us a sense of family, they can make us laugh or cry, sometimes they test our patience, and they always give us unconditional love.
