Is Medicine Breaking Us?
In part one of this article series, we talked about the rising costs associated with the current medical model and the significant risks and lack of true health improvement they offer. This article focuses on what I believe to be a much more cost effective and holistic approach.
The medical model we need moves beyond mainstream and alternative. In many ways it contains the best aspects of both and yet advances further. This new approach would best be described as containing three fundamental qualities:
Acknowledgment of the exposome as the primary driver of disease
Embracing an evolutionary or ancestral perspective
Applying a functional medicine approach to care
The exposome as the primary driver of disease was first suggested by Dr. Christopher Wild in 2005. The exposome is all of the non-genetic exposures a person experiences from the moment of conception until their last breath. Everything from the food we eat, the air we breathe, the water we drink and the social interactions and lifestyle choices we make are all a part of the exposome.
Evolutionary biology shows us that organisms are adapted to thrive in a specific environment. When the environment changes faster than genetics can adapt, we are left with a mismatch. Going back to the exposome, we see how an environmental trigger is the driver for gene activation.
What is a functional medicine approach? To answer this, the best thing we can do is to compare it against the current medical models of conventional and alternative medicine.
One thing I want to make clear is that conventional medicine is not the problem. Conventional medicine is very good at emergency and traumatic injury care. Without question, the imaging and testing capabilities of conventional medicine are incredibly valuable. Similarly, alternative medicine does a great job at working with the patient and seeing the body as an interconnected whole, and treatments tend to have fewer side effects.
For those who feel let down and frustrated with your current medical care, there is great news. The field of functional medicine is emerging rapidly and may very well be the approach you are looking for to help you reclaim and support your healthcare needs.
