Love Your Honey? Love Your Bees!
It’s National Honey Month, and a great time to think about bees. A whopping one-third of our diet is derived from insect-pollinated plants and, in the U.S., honey bees are responsible for an impressive 80 percent of that process. Simply put, without honey bees, there would be no almonds and production of many of the other healthy foods we take for granted would drastically decrease without the services of our honey bee friends.
As consumers have learned about the health benefits of honey, the demand for honey in the U.S. has outstripped domestic production. Imported honey contributed 61% to U.S. consumption in 2010, and more recent estimates by the National Honey Board have us importing 2/3 to 3/4 of the honey we consume.
While demand for honey has been on the rise, the honey bee population in the U.S. has been in decline. The widespread loss of honey bee hives in the last decade (up to 40% annually) has been linked to pervasive pesticide use, parasites, loss of foraging habitat and poor nutrition.
GloryBee is a company started by beekeepers, and selling honey continues to be a significant part of our business. We started SAVE the BEE in 2012 to raise awareness of the plight of honey bees and to fund research on colony loss.
Led by GloryBee, SAVE the BEE is a partnership of researchers, beekeepers, businesses and consumers committed to protecting honey bee health by:
1. Increasing awareness of the role honey bees play in a healthy food supply.
2. Funding scientific research on the causes of declining bee populations and solutions to enhance colony health.
3. Providing “best practices” education for farmers, gardeners and beekeepers.
SAVE the BEE is inspiring positive change to ensure the future of honey bees. Celebrate National Honey Month with us! Marlene’s has generously agreed to give 5% of sales of GloryBee’s SAVE the BEE products to the cause.
