Mushrooms are the New Kale
Anyone noticing mushrooms popping up in unexpected places? I don’t mean under the old tree in your yard. There’s a mushrooming trend you may have noticed finding its way into nearly every grocery aisle; from mushroom broth to mushroom coffee, mushroom jerky, and even mushroom ice cream. What’s the deal?
More than Portobellos:
First, let’s zoom out. Fungi are an entire Kingdom (separate from animals and plants). The Fungi Kingdom outnumbers plants at least 6 to 1! Many, many more than we normally think of when we hear the word “mushroom.”
An incredible subset of the Fungi Kingdom is functional mushrooms
. These are mushrooms with known benefits to humans. Reishi, chaga, lion’s mane and cordyceps are among the best known and while these may be new to us in the West, they’ve actually been used for thousands of years by cultures around the world.
The 101 on Functional Mushrooms: If you’re new to the world of mushrooms beyond the culinary scene, it’s time to look beyond the produce section and begin to bring more ‘shroom into your life. Why? Functional mushrooms may help support focus, energy, occasional stress, immune function and more! Out of the millions of fungi species, there are four that I like to recommend to everyone just getting started to support overall well-being:
Reishi
The Queen of Mushrooms, reishi brings ancient wisdom to help you meet the demands of our modern world. Reishi is an adaptogen and helps your body adapt to occasional stress. I recommend winding down with a reishi extract to help your body and mind chill out after a busy day.
Lion’s Mane
No mane of a lion here. This functional mushroom is your brain’s best friend. It has long been used by Buddhist monks to focus during meditation. I love using it at the start of the day to support productivity and creativity.
Chaga
The King of Mushrooms, chaga is overflowing with antioxidant properties and helps to support your immune system.
Chaga should be the first thing you pack (even before your swimsuit!) when heading on a trip. Fun fact: During WWII many people in Finland drank chaga tea as a coffee substitute...and still do!
Cordyceps
Your no-caffeine ally in energy. Cordyceps is great for athletes of all types as it may help support stamina and endurance when you’re on the move. You’ll be saying “Put me in, coach!” before you even realize it.
Breaking it Down
Sorry, raw foodies, but mushrooms are best not eaten raw! They won’t hurt you, but there is a compound in mushroom cell walls called chitin, which our bodies can’t break down. In order to make the beneficial compounds in the mushrooms become bioavailable, they must be extracted. This can be done with two primary methods: hot water or alcohol. Make sure to choose a mushroom product that has been extracted at least one way, if not both!
Thankfully, there are a variety of ways to incorporate high quality, extracted mushrooms into your daily routines. Functional mushrooms are easy to add to drinks you’re already sipping. Try a delicious instant mushroom coffee or tea to power on your mornings, add a mushroom blend to your smoothies, or unwind with a mushroom hot cocoa to satisfy your sweet tooth and chill out at the end of the day.
