The Hope of Tahoma
L’Arche is an international federation that began in France and has formed communities all over the world. Our community, L’Arche Tahoma Hope, was founded in Tacoma in 1977. At L’Arche, people with and without disabilities come together to build intentional community through shared meals, gardening, music and activities. Over the past 40 years, our community has grown to include a farm and garden work program, four adult family homes and, most recently, a Welcome Center.
The mission of L’Arche calls us to celebrate the gifts of all people through mutual relationship.
At the farm, people work together to grow plants and produce from seed to fruit and then sell at farmer’s markets throughout the community. The homes are warm and family-like where core members (the term we use for people with disabilities that are the “core” of our life together) are supported with their personal needs, tasty meals and fun outings in the community.
Our newest addition to the community, the Welcome Center, is a place where people gather for meaningful classes and activities. The Welcome Center was created to expand our mission to bring people of all abilities together. This is an open place where individuals and families join us for engaging programs and relationship building. We offer cooking, art and science classes, as well as dances, yoga, games and other fun events.
We are always eager for people to participate in the life of our community. Whether you are interested in participating in a class or activity, volunteering at our Welcome Center, farm or homes, or coming to visit us at a farmer’s market, you are welcome! Inga Rohde is the Outreach Coordinator at L’Arche Tahoma Hope. She enjoys
creating activities that provide a space for people to build relationships and connect
with the outdoors. She has worked in the community for 7 years on their farm,
caregiving in the homes and, most recently, teaching at the Welcome Center.
She enjoys meeting new people through fun and engaging social activities,
cooking and art classes. Inga is originally from the Midwest where she studied
Environmental Education. Her favorite cooking classes at L’Arche include using
fresh fruits and vegetables from the L’Arche Farm to create delicious meals. In
her free time she can be found camping, playing games and making music with
friends!
