Treating Minor Aches & Illnesses Naturally: Headaches
We only have one body and we need to treat it well. It is easy to pop a pill for a headache, take congestion medication for a stuffy nose or any number of pills, capsules, and liquids for whatever ails you. However, something to keep in mind is that every time you choose this method of easing these inconveniences of the body, you must recover twice. Once, from whatever was creating your discomfort and then to recover from the medication you chose to alleviate that discomfort. What if instead you tried some more natural methods? Methods that are considered Generally Recognized as Safe by the Centers for Disease Control? Everything I am going to recommend is safe for women who are pregnant as well as those currently taking prescription medication and those who must submit to regular urinalyses.
Headaches are one of the most common body complaints. Before reaching for an anti-inflammatory, drink an eight-ounce glass of water. Often, we are dehydrated and drinking water will help alleviate your headache.
If a glass of water has not helped, my favorite go-to remedy is to try some peppermint oil applied to your temples. This is not your mother’s baking extract, what I am referring to is essential oils. These are pure oils, extracted (usually cold pressed) from the leaves, roots, or seeds of the plant. You want a good quality peppermint oil. You can find great options at Marlene’s ranging in price from $16-$30 per 15 ml bottle. Apply a drop of oil to your fingertip and massage at your temples, keeping away from your eyes. I recommend also swiping a finger with oil across your forehead and applying a drop or two to the base of your skull where it meets your spine.
You can also take a relaxing bath with the lights dimmed or candles lit. The warm water will relax the muscles and the calm environment can melt stress away. Adding lavender bath salts can increase the effectiveness as lavender is well known for its relaxing effect on the body and mind.
Another option is massage. If you are blessed to have a partner that enjoys giving massages, take advantage of that. If not, ask a friend for a referral or look to your nearest chiropractor’s office. They usually employ one or two massage therapists on staff for their clients, but are available to the public. It is worth the money to have a trained professional knead the knots out of your sore muscles. They can also help you identify if there is something more than just stress causing your headaches.
Sometimes a headache is a good excuse for a nap! If you are at work, this may not be a viable option, but if you are able to completely relax and shut your eyes for a while, you may find it beneficial for relieving a stress headache or one brought on by fatigue.
