Vendor Visit: Choice Organic Teas
Marlene’s and Choice Organic Tea have long been partners in offering organic options when none existed. They were the first tea company to bring a 100% organic line of teas to our shelves. For nearly 30 years they have been traveling the world in search of the best teas and herbs available to craft delicious brews. Today, they remain forerunners. In addition to being Certified Gluten Free and Kosher, their blends are Fair Trade Certified and Non-GMO Project Verified.
Last May, we had the opportunity to meet the Choice Teas team at their facility in Seattle. The scent of tea – toasty, herbal and fruity – was the first thing that greeted us as we entered the facility, followed by Anne-Marie Phillips, Choice Organic Teas Vice President of Sales. When she told us that senior Vice President Ray Lacorte began his time at Choice in 1994, we discovered our companies had something in common. Many of us have fallen in love with what we do and have chosen to further our missions for the long term.
Anne-Marie led us to Choice’s tasting room as she explained how the company began. In 1989, Choice started importing a small selection of teas: Twig Kukicha, Bancha, Hojicha, and Premium Japanese Green. While these offerings are still available today, Eric Ring, Choice Vice President of Operations, has been masterfully formulating new and exciting flavors with a global supply of teas and herbs.
In addition to Original Teas featuring green, black, red and herbal, the Gourmet Teas line is a refreshing new take on tea blending with inspiration being drawn from the vibrant culinary culture in Seattle.
Choice builds wellness teas based on a long tradition of tea as medicine, and are some of our favorites! Wellness Teas have been developed in partnership with leading natural health educator Bastyr University and proceeds go directly to student scholarships! Not only are these teas healthful, they are also delicious!
We were encouraged to remember that all Choice teas and herbs are hand-harvested by hardworking humans. Responsible sourcing is important to us, to Choice Organic Teas and to farmers. By offering a large selection of Fair Trade Certified teas and herbs, Marlene’s and Choice teas are able to ensure that their creations are good for farmers, the planet and you.
After tasting, we got to see the production floor. It was amazing to see how complex and precise the process is to fill and package tea bags. They have several machines, but their pride and joy is a machine capable of packaging over 250 bags a minute! Using a crochet process, strings are attached to each tea bag without any staples. Side note: staple-free used tea bags make great composting material!
Running machines with so many moving parts requires a lot of energy. In order to deliver on their commitment to the planet, in 2003 Choice achieved 100% renewable energy offset and is an Envirostars partner.
We left inspired by Choice’s deep commitment to quality, care of the communities involved in production and dedication to environmental stewardship. We can’t wait to see what they come up with next. We know that it will be easy to make the right choice!
