Wabi Sabi - A Fresh Path on an Old Road
Here we find ourselves again in December, having come full circle from last year. How are you feeling? This is a strange time of year for many of us when our culture and our authentic instincts come together. Sometimes they blend in perfect harmony and other times they clash. We’re chronically busy and struggle to find the time and energy to create memories. Our normal doesn’t go on vacation. To create our holiday experiences, we pull, squish and smash everything together from Thanksgiving to the New Year and hope we are still standing come January.
Is this any way to say goodbye to 2019? Is it safe to be moving at warp speed and expect to land softly? I think not. For years, I have felt this pull and tug on my heart and energy. Our internal expectations are deeply ingrained and complicated. Of course, we want to do it all and give those we love everything. Spreading kindness and joy… and cleaning, cooking, shopping and working. Sigh. Our FOMO (fear of missing out) is strong and unruly. And yet this time of year is magical.
Have you heard of wabi sabi? The principles spoke to me years ago and have continued to be a source of grounded, simple wisdom. Look up wabi sabi and you’ll find many definitions, but when I think of it, I think of winter trees—naked and free of makeup and decorations. Bare works of art, authentic knots and moss, bends, curves and wisdom. I think of flowers that come up voluntarily in places that most things won’t grow and they bloom anyway.
Here is the thing…we need permission to break the rules of busyness, of our patterns and constrictive traditions. Wabi sabi asks us to pause and unclutter our own expectations of what this season really means, what nourishes us and what depletes us. It is letting go of what is too much and letting in the old, the imperfect and simple. It’s about just being. Try to see our holidays like the old twisted tree. Looking deep, we find extraordinary beauty in these trees. They are wise and unexpected. We find joy in little tiny details.
December will be exactly what it is. Thirty one days, the last month of the year. A season of festivities and long nights. Of all seasons and months, December is the crucial month to pause and listen. What do you truly need to be happy and fulfilled? This is the month we prepare to start a new year. To reflect, relish and review our last year.
Want a little nourishment to go with your December? Wabi sabi holidays are a fresh path on an old road. Seeing beauty in the old and the worn out in the dead of winter. It’s discovering and delighting over ordinary life. It’s learning to see beauty everywhere. It’s becoming present to the wonders of the moment, like being completely content on a Saturday afternoon. It’s listening to your heart and offering kindness to others and yourself. It’s uncluttering your life so your authentic life can shine.
“Beauty appears when something is completely and absolutely and openly itself.”

“Wabi sabi is a state of the heart. It is a deep in-breath and a slow
exhale. It is felt in a moment of real appreciation- a perfect moment
in an imperfect world. We can nurture it with our willingness to
notice details and cultivate delight. And we experience it when we are
living the most authentic, most inspired versions of our lives.”
