3 Way CBD Helps Support Comfort
“Pain is cited as the most common reason Americans access the health care system.”1 Approximately 1 in every 4 Americans has suffered from pain that lasts longer than 24 hours.1
What exactly is pain?
According to the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), pain is defined as an “unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage.”1 Pain can signal a pending disruption to the structure or function of our body, and it demands attention! The uncomfortable sensation of pain can be described as steady or intermittent, stabbing, tingling, throbbing, pinching, burning, aching and more.2,3 Pain can also be classified as either acute or chronic.2
CBD for Comfort
Cannabidiol (CBD) as a full-spectrum supercritical hemp extract is an appreciable option to help support comfort and relief. CBD influences the body through the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a network of receptors, enzymes and molecules embedded within the body’s nervous system. This network interacts in various ways to play a role in pain sensation, stress responses, sleep and mood.4 There are 3 ECS receptors that CBD can influence to help provide comfort:
1. The 5-HT1A is a receptor found in the brain that is referred to as part of the “serotonin receptors,” and it can be directly activated by CBD.4 Research demonstrates that CBD’s interaction with 5-HT1A leads to anti-anxiety effects.4 When someone is experiencing pain, their discomfort may be lessened if the associated anxiety is decreased.5
2. The TRPV-1 is a receptor that is present mostly in the peripheral nervous system, the part of the nervous system that connects the brain to the rest of the body. This receptor is involved in the body’s inflammatory response, mediating pain and body temperature.4 CBD can bind to and stimulate the TRPV-1 receptor. It is believed that in certain conditions associated with pain, TRPV-1’s sensitivity is heightened, and CBD’s interaction helps provide comfort by desensitizing the TRPV-1 receptor.4
3. GABA-A is a receptor that combines with gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA), which is a calming neurotransmitter in the body. CBD changes the shape of the GABA-A receptor to strengthen the calming effect.4 As a person relaxes, it may help calm their reaction to pain.
A Formula for Relief
Several herbs used in combination with CBD help provide extra support for pain, as associated with exercise and fitness. An Ayurvedic formula that includes turmeric,6 guggul,7 ginger,6 coriander,8 Boswellia,9 rosemary and black pepper helps promote comfort due to their combined efforts in modulating the inflammatory response through critical factors, and providing soothing properties. Full spectrum CBD, plus supercritical extracted herbs make a rescue combination that can help provide a comforting support during pain.*
