The Tea Tree: Tried and True
When Captain Cook landed in Australia in 1770, he found the locals brewing leaves in a tea for medicinal purposes and naturally assumed it was tea. He named the plant the tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia). He soon learned that the Aborigines had many uses for tea tree leaves, from soothing headaches and cleaning minor cuts to treating a host of topical skin ailments and foot fungus. Tea Tree Therapy continues that legacy today with over 28 products to keep you healthy from head to toe.
Today, tea tree oil is one of Australia’s most studied essential oils: Numerous studies have been done into its efficacy, stability (best when in a brown bottle with an inverted dropper) and oxidation. It is a natural antiseptic, bactericide and fungicide. Tea tree oil assists in cleaning infections like boils, sores, and nail infections. As an effective fungicide, it fights and controls athlete’s foot, ringworm and other fungal infections.
Tea tree oil can also be used as an antiseptic for acne prone skin. Apply a couple drops of oil to a cotton swab and apply directly to acne as a spot treatment. Tea tree oil is also beneficial in an oral care routine, which kills bacteria that causes plaque, tartar and bad breath.
Here are some simple ways to use tea tree oil every day:
As a strong organic solvent: Clear infections such as boils, sores and nail infections. Apply a small amount directly to the infected area twice daily.
As a natural antiseptic: Kill bacteria without damaging healthy skin cells. Add a couple drops to a cotton swab and apply directly to the acne prone area.
As an effective fungicide: Treat problems such as athlete’s foot, ringworm, and other fungal infections. Apply pure oil twice a day or antiseptic cream or antiseptic ointment to infected area.
For gum infections: Apply 2-3 drops of tea tree oil to a cotton swab and swab your gums, front and back. Use in conjunction with tea tree toothpaste, mouthwash and toothpicks for your complete oral care system.
For mold and mildew: Add a few drops of the pure tea tree oil to your furniture polish to prevent mold growing on wood surfaces. after washing down walls & removing grime & mildew, wipe over again with a damp cloth with a cap full of tea tree oil sprinkled onto cloth to prevent mildew growth.
For pets – Dogs and horses (but not cats!): Mix a capful of tea tree oil with a cup full of water and spray over dog or horses’ coats, then comb through to deter flies, mites and fleas. Caution: tea tree oil is extremely dangerous for cats to be around!
