Reset and Renew
1. Be Specific. If your goal is to exercise, define which kind of movement and muscle group you’re targeting. Do you need something gentle like Tai Chi or swimming? Maybe you want to tone your triceps or walk 5,000 steps/day by May? Be as detailed as possible from the outset. This will help you know when you’ve reached your goals.
2. Define Your Motivation. Go beyond, “I want to be healthier.” Does “healthier” mean being able to coach your child’s soccer team? Or finding the right balance of activities between multiple sclerosis flares without pushing yourself too hard? What is the essence of your goal?
3. Line Yourself Up for the Win. Break your health goal down into manageable pieces. Maybe you’re moving toward a plant-based diet. First, research and bookmark recipes. Pick a day to prepare a new meal and make sure you’ve given yourself enough time to enjoy the process.
4. Create Your Own Success Squad. Surround yourself with family, friends, and healthcare practitioners who are 100% on your team. Hold your goals at the forefront of your mind and check in with those who support you.
5. Accountability Counts. Whether you choose an accountability partner, a phone app, a spreadsheet or spiral notebook, find a system that works for you and use it. Set up regular times to check in with your daily and weekly goals.
6. Recognize that Set Backs Happen. Acknowledge that something unexpected will happen and this is part of the process. Reset and recalibrate. Play keep away from the instinctual urge to compare yourself to others and their timelines.
7. Visualize Achievement. From athletes to yogis to business executives, it’s no secret that visualization can keep your mind calm and focused on your goals. Set aside a couple of minutes each day to visualize yourself achieving a specific goal.
8. Bring the Fun Back. Goal setting doesn’t have to be unpleasant. Maybe your new walking circuit shows you a panoramic view of the city you didn’t even know existed. Or perhaps, this is just the thing to keep you and your partner more engaged. Whatever your goals for 2020, bring the fun.
9. Celebrate Your Victories. Pat yourself on the back when you reach one of your mini-goals. Notice your achievements and call them a win.
10. Check with Your Doctor First. Depending upon your health and medication status, you may need extra support and guidance. Always check in with your physician before making any lifestyle changes. Secure appropriate medical care and approval to keep you safely on track.
